THE TRENCH COAT IS YOUR SPRING WARDROBE STAPLE
words by GRACIE LIVINGSTON • Fashion
Much like denim jeans or an LBD are the foundation to any good fashion wardrobe, the trench coat is a spring season must.
Trench coats have a storied history. Although most people believe the coat gained notoriety in World War I, some form of the trench coat has been around since the early 1800s.
As early as 1823, rubberized cotton was being used to make weatherproof outerwear for British men - both civilian and military. But the unique cotton had its shortcomings and many clothiers tried to create their own versions of the fabric - including Thomas Burberry.
Burberry founded his eponymous menswear label in 1856 and shortly after designed the iconic Burberry trench coat. Although the classic trench is over 150 years old, the style remains ever relevant; a timeless and versatile style staple adorned by icons including Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe.
Designers continue to develop the traditional silhouette and play with color, fabric, and shape to produce fun, and inspiring takes on the beloved wardrobe staple.
