A PARIS HAUTE COUTURE DIARY

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN ARRIVING IN PARIS FOR HAUTE COUTURE WEEK.

For starters? Lots of unpacking - that’s if you haven’t managed to leave your planned looks behind at a previous destination (yes, four of my dresses for couture week remain perfectly primed and pressed, and hanging in a hotel room in Cannes). I was off to a good start already.

Thankfully, the little surprises waiting at my hotel in Paris provided the light reprieve needed to suppress my personal frustration. My mind quickly moved to a state of gratitude to all those kind enough to send gifts to make this week memorable. Like clockwork, Chanel sends the most thoughtful flowers to make you feel right at home.

Arrival day is special for many reasons. It is a chance to settle in, do your homework, and ready yourself for the intense days ahead. Couture week is not quite a marathon, but it is an endurance test nonetheless. The number of events on the calendar can make even the most efficient and steady planner a little nauseous. The need to look impeccable from sunrise to sunset (and beyond) for four days, is nothing to smirk at; yet a smirk, smile, and a touch of sanity are absolutely required.

Studying the schedule and sifting through a pile of invitations is one of those fun arrival day traditions. While paper invitations may seem a little odd in a digital-focussed age, France remains old-school, so don’t expect to arrive at the shows without an invite in hand.

Trust Givenchy to send the chicest invitation.

My late arrival into Paris, unfortunately, meant that I missed the Miu Miu Resort Show, but I managed to use some of my arrival day space to follow along on Vogue Runway (see my favorite looks below).

And even though I am away from New York, the daily grind goes on. The remainder of the evening (and early morning hours) is spent eagerly awaiting news on a very special September Issue shoot. I will likely forget the simple joy of timely email correspondence over the coming days - but like the ethos of couture itself, good things take time.
